If that wasn't enough, they encounter a couple of pretty unsettling characters who seem to be the only people around for miles. The other human survivors have turned into terribly disfigured mutants known as the "Family" who only walk the earth at night but have turned into ugily, grizzly predators. The last man alive (played by Charlton Heston) exists by gathering supplies by day from a deserted Los Angeles whose streets are strewn with the post-apocalyptic remnants of the super-funky '70s.

Someone else is in the room. Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) has also just regained consciousness and is chained to the opposite side of the room.
